Chapter 13: A Dangerous Stunt

The next morning, Kate and Humphrey awoke to the sound of birds chirping.

"Good morning, Kate." Humphrey says,

"Good morning." Kate replies,

"Nice to see you two up." Eve says, "We were waiting for you outside."

"Okay." Kate says as she and Humphrey get to their feet,

Kate and Humphrey follow Eve out of the den to where Winston, Wildfire, and Jet were waiting.

"So, why're we out here?" Kate asks,

"We were wondering if you had anything planned?" Garth says as he, Lilly, Wildflower, Star, Lupa and Ralph walk up.

"Nothing here." Kate says, "How about you?"

"Nope." Garth says, "Looks like the pups get to do whatever they want."

"But what'll we do?" Wildfire asks,

"Hey guys." Hunter says as he and Aatu walk up, "Aatu and I are going to the raging river near the Eastern Border, want to come?"

"Sure." Wildfire says,

"Count us in." Jet says as he and Ralph walk up to the group,

"Hey Lupa, you coming?" Ralph asks,

"No thanks." Lupa says, "I'd rather hang out with my mother today."

"Okay," Ralph says, "How about you Star?"

"Can I Mom?" Star asks Lilly,

"Sure." Lilly says, "But remember, if you go to the river, stay out of it."

"Okay, Mom." Star says, then she runs off to join the others,

Near the river, the pups were goofing off as usual while Aatu and Claw watch. After a few moments, Aatu rolls his eyes in disgust while watching his siblings and cousins, then he leaves. Soon enough, the pups reach the river.

"Wow! Look at that water go!" Ralph says as he watches the water in the raging river,

"Hey, look!" Jet says, pointing to a narrow log spanning the river, "Think it looks strong enough to cross?"

"It might be." Hunter says,

"Well then I dare someone to cross it." Jet says,

"How about Hunter?" Wildfire asks,

"No, he'd cross it without a problem." Ralph says,

"How about Wildfire?" Hunter asks,

"No, she'd have no problem either." Jet says,

"I'm sure I can cross it!" Star speaks up,

"Really?" Jet asks,

"But I'm not going to." Star says,

"Why? Chicken?" Ralph asks,

"No, my parents told me not to." Star says,

"Well, if that's the case, we'll have to tell the pack about the time you invaded a human's camp." Jet says,

"How did you…?" Star asks,

"You don't want to know." Ralph says,

"Well don't even think about telling them." Star says angrily,

"Really?" Jet asks,

"Just try me!" Star says,

"Then do it." Ralph says, "And we won't tell the pack about the time you invaded the human camp."

"Very well." Star says, then she walks up to the narrow log.

Star climbs onto the log and starts walking across it.

"See? I can do it!" Star says,

Star manages to get halfway across the log, but she loses her footing and falls.

"STAR!" Hunter calls out in alarm,

Star had managed to grab onto a branch sticking out of the log with her forepaws.

"I'm okay!" Star says, then the branch starts to crack, "On second thought, maybe not."

"Hold on Star! I'm coming!" Hunter says as he crosses the log,

The branch snaps off the log, but Hunter manages to catch Star as she falls. Unfortunately, Hunter starts to slide off the log too.

"Gotcha!" Wildfire says as she grabs onto Hunter to keep him from falling, but Star and Hunter release their grip on each other and Star falls into the river,

"Star!" Hunter calls out, "Jet, go get help!"

"Got it!" Jet says, then he runs off using his super-speed to find help,

"Hey! I could use some help here!" Star yells out,

"Already on it!" a voice says, then Claw appears dragging a long branch and she spans it across the river, "Grab on!"

"Got it!" Star says as she grabs onto a twig sticking out of the branch,

Claw pulls Star toward the shore, but the twig Star's holding onto snaps and Star starts going down the river again.

"So much for that idea!" Ralph says,

Meanwhile, Jet had found Lilly and Kate while looking for help.

"Mom, Aunt Lilly!" Jet calls to the two wolves,

"Jet? What is it?" Kate asks,

"It's Star, she fell into the raging river back there!" Jet says,

"WHAT!? The river!?" Lilly yells out, "Star can't match the speed of it!"

"Well, come on! I'll explain more on the way!" Jet says, "I don't know how much longer Star has until she reaches the waterfall!"

Jet, Kate, and Lilly run back to the river.
Meanwhile, Star had grabbed onto a rock to keep herself from getting washed away, but she was starting to lose her grip.

"Hold on Star!" Wildfire calls, "We're coming!"

Star loses her grip, and gets wash off again.

"Well, I hope you can make it fast, the waterfall's coming up!" Star says as she tries to fight against the current.

Wildfire soon comes up with a vine tied around her and jumps into the river and swims after Star. Star nearly goes over the waterfall, but Wildfire manages to grab Star by her neck scruff before she goes over.

"I got her, pull us in!" Wildfire yells as she tries to keep her grip on Star,

"Okay!" Hunter says as he pulls the 2 pups toward the shore with the vine Wildfire's attached to.

In no time at all, Hunter had pulled Star and Wildfire to safety.

"Thanks for saving me." Star says as lies on the ground, dripping wet and exhausted,

"No problem." Wildfire says,

"So, who's idea was it to make Star cross the log?" Claw asks,

Everyone just throws angry glances at Ralph.

"Hey, it wasn't my idea." Ralph says,

"STAR!" a panicked voice yells out,

"Looks like Jet found help already." Hunter says,

Lilly and Jet come at full speed with Kate close behind.

"Star, are you okay!?" Lilly asks her daughter in shock,

"I'm fine Mom." Star says, "Thanks to Wildfire and Hunter."

"But who's idea was it for you to cross the river anyway?" Kate asks, her response was a couple of angry glares toward Jet and Ralph.

"We'll talk about this at home." Kate says,

Later, at the dens, Lilly was cleaning the water out of Star fur while Kate was cleaning the water out of Wildfire's fur.

"Star, we're disappointed in you for what you did." Garth says,

"I know." Star says,

"You disobeyed us for crossing the river." Garth says, "You know better than that!"

"I know." Star says, "But it wasn't my fault, Jet and Ralph dared me too."

"Well, since they threatened you to do it, you're off the hook." Garth says, "But next time, come and alert us. We'll take care of it."

"Okay," Star says,

Meanwhile, outside the den, Humphrey and Hutch were talking with Jet and Ralph.

"Kids, Hutch and I are very disappointed in you." Humphrey says, scolding the 2 pups,

"And pretending to tell Star that you'd tell the pack about the time she invaded the human camp was uncalled for." Hutch adds,

"We know." Jet says,

"You two are grounded and confined to the dens for a week." Humphrey says, "That means now going out, no hanging out with your friends, and no extra caribou at night!"

"Okay." Jet and Ralph say in disappointment,

"And next time, think about the consequences before you dare someone." Hutch says,

"Okay." Jet and Ralph say in unison.
