Chapter 8: Carrying New Pups

Back on the western side of the valley, Winston had returned to his den and then Humphrey comes out.

"How'd it go?" Humphrey asks Winston,

"Hutch and Wildflower's pups came through just like yours and Kate's." Winston replies,

"How many?" Humphrey asks,

"Three" Winston replies,

"Three?" Humphrey says in surprise,

"Yes," Winston replies, "Hutch said he thought you'd be surprised."

"Well, he was right." Humphrey says,

Just then, Can-do comes up. "Sir, news from the East." he says to Winston.

"What is it?" Winston asks Can-do,

"Lilly and Garth's pups came through." Can-do replies, "They're going to have 2 pups just like Kate is."

"Thanks for letting us know." Winston says, "Continue with your duties."

"Yes sir." Can-do says, then he walks off.

Just then, Winston and Humphrey hear yelling from their den.

"What the...?" Humphrey says in confusion,

"Wait here." Winston says and he enters the den.

A few moments later, Winston comes back out.

"Well?" Humphrey asks,

"Kate had a mood swing." Winston says,

"Oh, I know those." Humphrey says, "I was afraid Kate would have one of those."

"Well, good luck when it happens again." Winston says,

"I'll do my best." Humphrey says, then he walks into the den.

"Hey Humphrey." Kate says, "Sorry about the mood swing if you heard it. I didn't see it coming."

"Me neither." Eve says in agreement.

"Don't worry about it." Humphrey says, nuzzling Kate.

"Thanks." Kate says,

"Well, I'll leave you two alone and take out the trash." Eve says, moving what's left of the caribou Kate was eating out of the den.

"Okay." Kate says,

Eve moves the carcass out of the den and drops it off the ledge, unfortunately, she ends up losing her footing and falls off herself. Just then, Humphrey comes up and grabs onto one of Eve's forelegs.

"Need a lift?" Humphrey says and he pulls her back onto the ledge.

"Thank you, Humphrey." Eve says,

"No problem." Humphrey says, "Just like I'd be there for Kate, I'd also help anyone else she cares for. Even if they scare me."

Eve laughs at Humphrey's joke. "That's a good one."

"Thanks." Humphrey says, "Might as well get hunting. Kate's pups might get hungry soon."

"That's true." Eve says,

"Okay, keep a good watch on Kate until I get back." Humphrey says,

"Okay, see you later!" Eve says and she goes into the den.

Later, Humphrey reaches the area where the hunters gather and sees Hutch, Garth, Can-do, and Scar waiting.

"Hey guys." Humphrey says, "Ready for some hunting."

"Good timing." Garth says, "Our mates are going to need the grub."

"By the way Humphrey, did you get the message about your sister's pups?" Hutch asks Humphrey,

"Sure did." Humphrey says, "And just like you predicted, I was surprised."

"I thought you'd be." Hutch says,

"Okay now guys, let's go." Scar says as he goes into the valley.

"Okay," Humphrey says, "It's huntin' time!"

A few moments later, the 5 wolves were crouched in the tall grass, stalking about 15 caribou.

"Okay, upon Garth's signal, we go." Humphrey whispers to Can-do and Hutch.

"Got it." Hutch replies to Humphrey.

Then Humphrey looks toward the caribou and sees Garth across the small herd, then Garth shakes his tail in a certain way and Humphrey replies by shaking his tail the same way.

"Go!" Humphrey whispers and he jumps, followed by the rest of the wolves. Soon enough they take down the caribou, but three of them get away.

"Oh no you don't!" Humphrey says as he gives chase, then he jumps into one of the caribou and bites the neck of it, killing it instantly and it falls to the ground. Then he jumps and lands on one of the other caribou and bite its neck. Followed by the same result as the other one and Humphrey jumps onto the last one, repeating the process and jumps off as the caribou hits the ground, dead.

"Got them!" Humphrey says to others,

"Good work Humphrey!" Garth says, "Now lets get these guys home for dinner!"

"Okay!" Humphrey says,

About half an hour later, the caribou were taken to the dens and the females were already enjoying them.

"Wow Humphrey," Kate says, "I really can't believe you took down three caribou by yourself when they were running away."

"I learned from the best." Humphrey says, "But it's my love for you that keeps me going."

"Nice to see that works out." Kate says,

"Why thank you." Humphrey says,

"No problem." Kate replies, "But I am a bit mad at you."

"Really?" Humphrey says, immediately noticing she was having a mood swing, "What for?"

"What for!? For making me fat!" Kate yells at Humphrey,

"Oh, and you're blaming me for this!" Humphrey says, matching her attitude to make him seem like he was mad, "You wanted to have pups!"

"So did you!" Kate yells back at him.

"Now I'm really positive your Eve's daughter!" Humphrey yells at Kate,

"Oh now we're bringing my mother into this!" Kate yells back at Humphrey.

Humphrey remains silent, then after 30 seconds, Kate bursts into tears.

"Oh Humphrey, I'm so sorry!" Kate says,

"Hey, it's okay." Humphrey says, hugging Kate. "I forgive you and I always will! it was just a mood swing after all."

"Thank you." Kate says, starting to calm down.

"How about we get some sleep?" Humphrey asks, "Maybe you'll be in a good mood tomorrow."

"Okay." Kate says, then she climbs into the bed she and Humphrey share.

"See you in the morning." Humphrey says after lying down next to Kate.

"I'll be waiting." Kate says, then she doses off.

The next morning, Marcel and Paddy are walking to the golf course.

"I wonder how well this next game will go?" Paddy says,

"Who knows," Marcel says, "It's like they say, you'll know it when it hits you."

Just the Garth comes running up carrying a turtle shell full of water in his mouth.

"Look out! Coming through!" Garth yells, running over Marcel, "Sorry Marcel!"

Just then, two squirrels come up chasing after Garth and also run over Marcel.

Then Shakey comes up, "Hey wait up!" he yells, also running over Marcel. "Sorry!" He calls back to the goose.

"Speaking of knowing it when it hits you..." Paddy says to Marcel, who was now as flat as a pancake.

Meanwhile Garth is still running, and he passes a group of wolves.

"Hey! Watch it!" One of the wolves yells out,

"Sorry!" Garth says, "My pups are coming!"

"Code blue! Code blue!" One of the squirrels yells out,

"Or pink if one of both of them are girls!" The other squirrel says,

Just then, Garth trips on a rock tossing the turtle shell into the air and slides down a hill.

"We got it!" The squirrels say and jump onto Garth's head, catching the turtle shell afterward.

Then the three animals reach a cliff and Garth stops right on the the edge, nearly dropping the squirrels and the shell in the process.

"Whew! That was close." Garth says,

Just then Skakey comes up also sliding down the hill, "Look out!" He yells, crashing into Garth.

Then the 4 animals fall off the cliff and land in a tree and fall down it, hitting and breaking some of the branches in the process. Then Garth comes out with the turtle shell covering his eyes.

"Lilly? Lilly!" Garth cries out, unaware Lilly is right next to him, "Where are you? Where am I!?"

"Garth!" Lilly says to her mate, "I told you it was just a kick."

Garth snaps back into reality and takes the shell off of his head.

"Oh, right. A kick." Garth says, blushing a bit from how he reacted to it at first. "Sorry."

"Don't worry about it." Lilly says,

Then the bunch of wolves Garth nearly hit earlier come up, waiting for the news.

"Sorry everyone! False alarm! It was just a kick!" Garth says,

The crowd groans in disappointment as they leave.

"You know who I'd like to kick!?" One the wolves yells out.

"That's the second false alarm this week!" Another wolf says,

"Okay, break it up!" Tony says as he comes up,

"Thanks for helping me." Garth says to the squirrels, "You go back to Reba and Janice now."

"Okay, thanks!" One of the squirrels says as he and the other take off.

"Garth, I know you're happy about having pups," Lilly says, "I am too, but I think you're getting a little carried away."

"Yeah, you're right." Garth says,

"What do you say we get back to the den? After all I don't like to walk while carrying our pups, sometimes I feel like I might accidentally hurt them." Lilly says,

"Sure." Garth says, "See you back at the den, Dad!"

"Later!" Tony says,

Soon Garth and Lilly reach a log and Garth climbs over it, but stops for Lilly.

"Need help?" Garth asks,

"Sure." Lilly says, handing out a forepaw.

Garth takes Lilly's forepaw and slowly pulls her over the log.

"There you go." Garth says,

"Thanks." Lilly says,

"No problem." Garth says, "Must be kinda hard to get around while carrying those pups."

"Are you saying I'm fat?" Lilly says, starting to get mad.

"No, of course not." Garth says calmly, knowing Lilly was having a mood swing.

"I'm sorry." Lilly says, lowering her head and causing her bangs to cover her left eye, "Mood swing."

"Hey, don't worry about it." Garth says, pushing her bangs back so he could see her beautiful lavender eyes, "It wasn't your fault."

"Thank you." Lilly says, nuzzling her head into Garth's chest.

"Let's get you home." Garth says, and he and Lilly walk back to their den.

Back at their den Garth pulls out a caribou and a large leaf loaded with berries and nuts.

"Okay, dig in!" Garth says, then Lilly starts eating the nuts and berries.

"Dang. I think one or both the pups are going to be like Reba and Janice." Garth says,

"I know," Lilly says, "It's like they prefer nuts or berries more than meat."

After eating the berries and nuts, Lilly started on the caribou and was devouring it more slowly than the berries and nuts.

"Yep, the pups definitely like the nuts and berries more." Garth says,

Meanwhile at sunset, Hutch and Wildflower are seen sitting on the ledge in front of their den together.

"Boy, I tell you Wildflower, it's not easy being a father." Hutch says in a sleepy tone. "It gets tiring having to hunt nearly 24/7."

"I know how you feel." Wildflower says, "I feel like I've been lazing around and gained a lot of weight."

"I'll bet you do." Hutch says, "It certainly isn't easy being a mother either."

"Are you saying I'm not a good parent?" Wildflower asks Hutch in an quiet, but angry tone.

"No, of course not." Hutch says calmly, quickly noticing her mood swing,

"Sorry," Wildflower says, "Mood swing."

"It's okay." Hutch says, wrapping his foreleg around her as if giving her a hug.

Just then, Humphrey and Kate appear.

"Hey." Humphrey says as he walks up to the pair.

"Hey," Wildflower says to Humphrey, "What brings you here?"

"Just wanted to see how your pups were doing." Humphrey says,

"They're doing fine." Wildflower says, "How're Kate's?"

"Same as yours." Kate replies,

Just then Marcel and Paddy come up.

"Hey Marcel, Paddy." Humphrey says,

"Hello to you too." Marcel says, "I see you and your love have really gotten to repopulating."

"We sure did." Humphrey says,

Just then, Kate's stomach growls.

"Uh oh." Hutch says, upon hearing Kate.

"Ugh...so hungry...need..." Kate says, then looks toward Marcel and Paddy, "FOOD!"

"Fly away!" Humphrey yells,

The two waterfowl panic and take off as Kate starts chasing them.

"Sorry I have leave so soon!" Humphrey says to Hutch and Wildflower.

"Don't worry," Wildflower says, "We know."

Humphrey chases after Kate as she is trying to get the birds who're dodging through trees, rocks, bushes, and logs. Then Kate manages to grab onto Marcel and he carries her off.

"You know, this is a lot harder than carrying your husband!" Marcel yells at Kate.

Then Kate takes a jump to try grab Marcel with her teeth, but only results getting some feathers into her mouth and falling. Then Humphrey comes up and catches Kate.
However though, Kate is still obsessed with trying to catch Marcel and Paddy and tries to escape Humphrey's grip, but Humphrey bites Kate's ear and she snaps back into reality as the two birds come back.

"Come on, let's get you back to the den for some caribou." Humphrey says,

"Okay," Kate says, then she turns to Marcel and Paddy, "Sorry about trying to eat you guys."

"Tell that to my lost tail feathers you're probably digesting now!" Marcel says,

Kate spits out the feathers she had in her mouth. "Sorry about that too."

Just then, Lilly and Garth come up.

"Hey, what's going on here?" Lilly asks,

"Kate went power-hungry on Marcel and Paddy." Humphrey says,

"Ouch." Garth says,

"I know." Kate says, "Humphrey was just taking back to the den some of the leftover caribou."

"Okay," Lilly says, "See you later."

Humphrey carries Kate back to their den and drags out a caribou for her to eat. Soon enough Kate was deliberately inhaling it.

"I needed that." Kate says after eating the caribou,

"I hope that your pups eat slowly." Humphrey says, "I'm too exhausted from carrying you back here."

"But you have the skills of an Alpha!" Kate says to Humphrey.

"Just because I have skills doesn't make me an Alpha." Humphrey says, "I'm still an Omega."

"That proves it." Kate says, "Maybe some of the other alphas can hunt for you, Garth, and Hutch while they stay with mates and you can stay with me."

"Now you're talking." Humphrey says, nuzzling Kate.

Soon enough, Eve and Winston arrive.

"Hey kids." Winston says,

"Hey Dad, Mom." Kate says,

"So, how've you been?" Eve asks Kate,

"I've been doing good," Kate says, "At least until I tried to eat Marcel and Paddy."

"Ooh." Winston says in a disappointed tone,

"I know." Kate says, "Sorry."

"Don't worry about it." Eve says, "I once nearly killed Hutch for food myself while I was carrying you and Lilly."

Kate and Humphrey's jaws dropped open in shock and surprise after hearing that.

"But at least Winston snapped me back into reality before I hurt him." Eve says,

"How?" Kate asks,

"By biting her ear." Winston says,

"Wow," Kate says, "That's what Humphrey did to me when I tried to eat Marcel and Paddy."

A surprised reaction appeared on Eve as Humphrey knew what was about to happen. But Kate gets between Eve and Humphrey before any bloodshed takes place.

"Don't blame him." Kate says, "Humphrey did what he could."

"I was just going to thank him keeping you from harming your friends." Eve says,

"Oh, good." Humphrey says, nearly fainting. "I thought you were going to kill me for a moment."

"Now why'd I do that since you saved me from falling off the ledge in front of our den?" Eve asks,

"She does have a point Humphrey." Kate says, "You did pull back up after all."

"Now that I think about it, you're right." Humphrey says, "You're welcome Eve."

"Pleasure's all mine." Eve says,

"Now how about we get some caribou to eat?" Winston asks, "It's already dinner time."

"None for me." Kate says, "I'm full. So are the pups."

"Then that leaves Humphrey and us." Eve says, "Let's eat."

Winston, Eve, and Humphrey get a caribou from the back of the den and start eating it.
